Shifting Paradigms of Service: Updated Approaches to Teaching and Learning in the Technical and Professional Communication Service Course

Although the TPC service course is widely taught, there is still little research done on the specifics of teaching and learning in the course—and even less from a field wide perspective. In an era of ongoing accountability, decreasing humanities enrollments, and ongoing reliance of contingent labor, we asked ourselves: how are courses putting students and learning at the center of the classroom experience? What does it look like in practice to put students at the center of a teaching and learning experience?

This collaborative book project seeks to build on and to extend from current research in TPC to provide administrators and faculty an in-depth look at the teaching and learning practices in the service course in the US. Our aim is to do this through field-wide data on the size and scope of the course, interviews with faculty and administrators, and in-depth, data-driven local examples of teaching and learning.
